Pairing an EV charger with solar and a battery

Last reviewed 7 October 2026. Written for Broadstairs, Kent. Figures are estimates, not quotes.

Short answer. Solar can charge your car, but only when the sun shines and the car is at home. A battery lets you charge at night from stored power or a cheap tariff. An EV chargepoint grant for flats and renters, up to £500 a socket, runs to 31 March 2027.

Charging from your roof

An electric car can use a lot of power. A smart charger can follow your solar output and take only the spare. In winter there is little spare, so you will still use grid power. In summer, a car left at home in the day can run largely on your own power.

Where the battery fits

A battery stores midday power so you can charge in the evening. It can also charge cheaply overnight on a smart tariff. See our cheap overnight tariffs guide.

Flats and renters

GOV.UK says the EV chargepoint grants for flats and renters, landlords and on-street parking run until 31 March 2027, at a maximum of £500 per socket from 1 April 2026. Check the current page before you apply.

Rules and fitting

A home charger should be fitted by a qualified electrician and may need a call to South Eastern Power Networks if it adds a lot of load. We cover it as part of your quote.

Questions people ask

Can solar fully charge my car?

Not in winter. In summer, with the car at home in the day, much of the charge can come from solar.

Do I need a special charger?

A smart charger that follows solar output helps. Ask what works with your system and tariff.

Does the 0% VAT cover a charger?

The 0% VAT relief is for solar and batteries. A charger is separate, so check the VAT on its quote.
