Solar panels near the sea: what to ask for

Last reviewed 7 October 2026. Written for Broadstairs, Kent. Figures are estimates, not quotes.

Short answer. A roof near the sea sees salt in the air. European Commission guidance advises panels certified to the IEC 61701 salt mist standard, corrosion-resistant mounting parts and regular inspection and cleaning. Ask for those details in writing on a coastal quote.

What the guidance says

The European Commission's clean energy islands guidance on salt exposure advises choosing panels certified to the IEC 61701 salt mist testing standard, especially at the higher severity levels meant for marine settings. It also says corrosion-resistant mounting structures and components, with regular inspection and cleaning, are essential. It is written for European islands and coasts, not specifically for the UK, so we treat it as a sensible checklist and not a UK rule.

What to ask your installer

  • Is the panel certified to IEC 61701 salt mist, and at which severity level?
  • What are the rails, clamps and fixings made of, and are they rated for coastal air?
  • What does the warranty say about corrosion?
  • How often should the array be inspected and cleaned, and who does it?

Where it matters in Broadstairs

Broadstairs sits on chalk cliffs with seven named bays, so many roofs face the open sea. It matters most for houses on the cliff-top and the headland, such as around Bleak House, Stone Bay and Joss Bay. Streets further inland are less exposed. We do not claim a distance rule, because we have not found a UK source for one.

Planning still applies

Several seafront areas are in conservation areas. See our planning guide.

Questions people ask

Does salt air stop panels working?

We have not found a UK source that says so. The European guidance advises salt-mist certified panels and corrosion-resistant fixings.

Does a battery need anything special?

A battery inside a garage or utility room is not exposed to salt air in the same way. Ask the manufacturer about the install location.

Should I pay extra for coastal panels?

Ask what certified panels and stainless or coated fixings add to the quote, and weigh that against the warranty terms.
